The memorial marks the location where "London Bridge" was built, the first Bailey Bridge to be built in France.

The bridge was 358 ft long, consisting of a 100 ft landing bay, a 32 ft end floating bay, two 42 ft floating bays and one 110 ft landing bay bridging the 313 ft gap.

The memorial is located on the bank of Canal de Caen 500 meters inland from Pegasus Bridge on the side of the Cafe Gondree. Originally sommerfield track was laid across ploughed field from the main road which was later covered in hardcore.
