PFC Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial

A memorial to Charlie Neilans DeGlopper who was a Private First Class in C Company, 1st Battalion, 325th Glider Regiment, 85nd Airborne Division.

1st Battalion, 325th Glider Regiment were ordered to recapture the western tip of La Fiere Causeway. In the early hours of the 9th June 1944 they left their assembly point at La Couture Farm, they crossed the D126 and moved through the wheat field.

Part of C Company ventured too far, going through a hedge coming out on the steep road near the hamlet of Faux.

Realising the were surrounded on three sides by German forces, Pfc Charles DeGlopper took charge moving to the centre of the road and firing his BAR machine gun on full auto from the hip covering his section as they withdrew. He continued firing even after being shot twice before he was killed by a third fatal shot.

He was commended for the Medal of Honour which was awarded posthumously on the 28th February 1948.
