THE "FILTHY 13" WAS THE NICKNAME OF THE DEMOLITION PLATOON
ATTACHED TO THE 3rd Bn/506th PIR.
THE 3rd Bn SUPPORTED BY ONE PLATOON OF C. CO./326TH AIRBONE
ENGINEER BATTALION HAD TO BE DROPPED ON THE DROP ZONE "D"
SITUATED SOUTH OF VIERVILLE AND EAST OF ANGOVILLE-AU-PLAIN. THAT
FORCE HAD TO STRIKE SOUTHWARD SEIZE THE TWO BRIDGES NEAR "LE
PORT" AT THE MOUTH OF THE DOUVE RIVER AND TO ESTABLISH A
BRIDGEHEAD SOUTH OF THE RIVER. BY SEIZING THE HIGH GROUNDS IN THE
DIRECTION OF BREVANDS THE BATTALION WOULD LINK UP WITH THE
AMERICAN FORCES MOVING NORTHWARDS FROM OMAHA BEACH.
