The artificial Mulberry harbour was built by the Allies at Arromanches (later known as Port Winston) to enable the rapid offloading of supplies, troops and vehicles into Normandy once the beachhead had been secured.
The harbour was prefabricated in the UK before being towed across the channel and assembled. The harbour consisted of steel roadways which floated on steel and concrete pontoons. Despite being designed to last for 3 months the harbour at Arromanches was used for 10 months allowing up to 18000 tons of supplies to be unloaded each day.
One of the best spots to view the harbour from is the high cliffs to the east of Arromanches near the 360 cinema.
