It was unveiled for the 75th anniversary of D-Day and commemorates the Polish 131 Wing, whose squadrons were the first to operate from French soil after the landings. The site offers visitors a peaceful place to reflect on the Polish contribution to the liberation of France and the bravery of those who flew from nearby airfields during the summer of 1944.
POLISH AIR FORCE MEMORIAL
This monument, unveiled as part of the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, commemorates the return of the Polish Air Force to the mainland of Europe, and the role of Polish Airmen in the Normandy Campaign and the Liberation of France. Polish 131 Wing, comprising 302 "City of Poznań" 308 "City of Kraków" and 317 "City of Wilno" Squadrons, was based at the Advanced Landing Ground B10, on the fields above Plumetot, from 3rd August to 6th September 1944: they were the first units of the Polish Air Force to have a base in France. By the end of the war, around 19,000 airmen were serving in the Polish Air Force, providing 15 Squadrons to support the Allied effort in the West – the largest contribution made by any German-occupied country.
