CAMBES HALT8 contEverything is set for the battle. It is this bns first prelude
0230-0420to battle, and sleep isnt easy.l
0420(H hr) The barrage begins according to plan and it is reported
that the tps have crossed the start line. The 2/6 S.Staffords
(temp u/comd 197 Inf Bde) are to attack GALMANCHE 0073 and the
6 N.Staffords are to attack Le BIJUDE 0273. A The noise is terrific
enemy MG's & Mortars joining in with our barrage. Air burst shells
    over our locations (CAMBES).
It is difficult to get a clear picture of the battle there are
reports that Le BIJUDE is going well and reports that the 2/6th
are having a difficult time twds GALMANCHE.
Our "D" Coy report 6 barrel mortar (NEBELWERFER) fire on them.
0630Uncomfirmed report that all of Le BIJUDEand half of GALMANCHE
is captured. Typhoons are helping "shoot-in" N. Staffords.
There are reports that snipers are infiltrating into area, lots
    Page 4 of 25

CAMBES HALT80630of overhead shots but no cas. A number of cas are now coming
back, the M.O. and his stretcher bearers are being kept busy
and Red Cross jeeps are constantly on the go,
0730Orders to launch Phase 2 of attack: this invloves the WARWICKS
attacking ST. CONTEST. L.F's attack MALON and the NORFOLKS,
attack EPRON. More snipers reported with more M.G and Rifle fire
in Bn area, steps are being taken to deal with them.
0915Intermittent shelling of Bn area, some cas.
1000Still sniper trouble. 2 are shot by our snipers, excellent work
done by Cpl. Gripton and his sniper section.
1000The battle is very fluid. It is not certain whether GALMANCHE
-or LE BIJUDE are in our hands, PW of both 16 GAF Div and
160012 SS Div are coming in. Bag of snipers is now 6.
1730Code word to launch Phase 3 (Attacks on LA FOLLIE and COUVERECHEF
is given, but immediately after orders are given to gunners to cease fire.

CAMBES HALT9Most of the shots are high and may well be unaimed with the intention
of worrying us. If this is the Boch intention it certainly
    succeeds.
0700Patrol out to contact flanks. This is successful and patrol leaders
report direct to Bde with information.
1030At this time all the area and flanks have been reported clear of enemy
at any rate so far this morning there has been no sniping.
11105th S. Staffords report GALMANCHE clear except for odd snipers.
11306th N. Staffords attack from LE BIJUDE to trench system fwd of
MELON. There is a heavy barrage and tks but little information
    is received in early stages.
1200Information that attack has gone 400 yds. Right flank going well
Left flank started off on wrong foot owing to a barrage falling
among two leading pls and causing several cas. The attack cont
to go well and N. Staffords report lots of dead Germans.

attacks with tks must be the drill in future - it appears that
the tks were insistent upon sticking to the "role" of the tks and

90365816The remainder of the Battle is best described by the account
(attached) of the Coy Comds of 'A' 'B' & 'D' Coys. From the
Command Post the picture of the Battle was difficult to follow
it was shown to be undoubtedly true that once a Coy or Coys
is launched into Battle there is very little that can be done
to help. The plan must be good and the rest is hope. By
1100 hrs the attack appeared to be successful, the Boche had
been cleared of our immediate objectives and they were all of
the 277 Div, Inf mostly made up of poles, Austrians and Russians.
They are good fighters but once over-run are quite prepared to
give up and declare that they hate Hitler and were forced to
fight. They are a very bad lot, filthy and generally not
in particularly good condition. Nov. the the immediate Battle
is over it is possile to see how little information we had before
the attack, when we were told to exepect a coy, a Bn faced us
    Page 14 of 25
PlaceDateHourSummary of Events and InformationReferences to Appendices
16,when we were supposed to find the odd MG there was at least
a Coy, undoubtedly the Bn did very well. The Command Post
is moved to the Bldg at QUEUDVILLE, The smell is dreadful,
and there are several burning tks. The tk Sqn backed us up
very well. There was constant Mortaring and some Shelling
of the Coy Areas and Bn HQ, and there was not very much peace
as the night came onAppx P, Q, R

90365817Day after battle. Pockets of enemy still remaining fwd of our

to BORDEL, they ascertained that this place was occupied by
owing to the fluidness of the battle to posns not being clear

found to be unit of 197 Inf Bde. Our dead were buried during
the day by parties found by "B" Ech. Shelling and Mortaring
was experienced during the day. During the evening 2/6 S. Staffords
attacked NOYER And mopping up going on 1900hrs they consolidated
on Pt 126 and area 880632. Enemy air attack which was very sharp
at 2330hrs left large fires burning on our left. Comd Offr
decided to move Bn HQ up at last light, on arrival at new
location quantities of "S" Mines and Booby Traps were found
in area and so it was decided to return to present location.
18Back in old location by midnight, Bn HQ received orders that

    - Flame-throwers were used with little effect and Coy
was withdrawn 200x to reorganise. This was about 1630hrs and
fighting was going on around the station - tks pouring in their
    fire from MG's.

88763918 contBy 1700hrs orders had been issued to consolidate and when this
was complete the tks withdrew. Food arrived at 2000hrs and Comd
offr and I.O. left for Bde "O" Gp. The A.tk Guns were in posns
by 2040hrs. At Bn "O" Gp held around midnight the Comd Offr in-
formed coy comds of a hvy barrage which was being put down on
NOYER during the night by Med Arty, to try and shift enemy,
fwd coys were ordered to withdraw 400x for safety.
19As instructed at "O" Gp on 18th fwd coys withdrew and the hvy
barrage on NOYERS came down about 0230hrs. It continued until
just before first light when the fwd coys returned and consolidated
Around 0840hrs two Strecher Bearers went out to bring in an
injured man near Rly at 881631 and were fired on from a dug - in
tk at 879628, one Strecher Bearer being killed. After an "O" Gp

88763919 contCoys sent out patrols and Snipers and "I" OP was established.
Much useful information about the enemy was gained, The Div
Comd visited Bn HQ at 1000hrs.
20At 0530hrs six deserters came thro' "B" Coy lines. They were thought
to be Poles. One was a C.S.M. who talked a lot. They were
all quickly sent back for interrogation, During the stand to on orders given the
night before the Bn deployed over a bigger area, the main move
being A Coy which took over from a Coy of 5th S Staffords at
886635, D Coy came back to area 883635 and a Pl of C Coy moved
out to their position on right flank, the whole move was carried
out smoothly and there were no incidents. The enemy mortared
us at 0620 hrs, bearings from 3 different places were obtained,
later 5 cas were suffered in D Coy through mortaring in same
direction. One of our daylight patrols was shot up by an enemy
MG and Lieut Laxer was wounded rather seriously.

morning bright and sunny which quickly changed, it poured with
rain for the remainder of the day making every one very wet.
Soon the area was very muddy and the Bn were kept very busy
baling out slit trenches and improving shelters. The enemy
mortared our positions twice during the day at 1600 hrs on
our left bearing 225 degrees and very heavy barrage of forty
shells at 1715 hrs on our right. Rum was issued at 2000 hrs.
22The morning started well by two deserters who came through B Coys
lines. They talked quite freely and were quickly passed back to Bde
for interrogation. The morning was still dull with intermittant
rain which didnt improve the state of the ground. The morning in
our area was quite but things livened up during the afternoon,
the enemy mortaring the Bn HQ area about every 15 mins with
a particularly heavy concentration of 16 shells at 1430 hrs.
