    1Lt. General K.A.N. Anderson, K.C.B. M.C. visited the Seaforth
Bns of this Bde in the morning. Vehicles were got ready for
marshalling which takes place 2 JUNE.
O.C. tps. in this Bde toured their respective ships.
2Vehs of Bde. H.Q. 2 Seaforth and 5 Seaforth were marshalled
today ready for loading into M.T. ships. The marching
parties of 2 Seaforth and 5 Seaforth were divided in half-
one half of each being carried by one ship. The first
marching party Lt. Col.G.L.W. Andrews were moved to
    another camp ready to embark.
3Vehs of the a/m units were loaded in to M.T. ships and
the first marching parties embarked. Second marching party of
2 & 5 Seaforth were moved this evening ready to embark
tomorrow. When vehs had been loaded personnel excepting small
maintenance parties were returned to camp to await embarkation.

4The day was spent awaiting time of embarkation.
5The Bde was embarked and these ships carried us out into the
Thames estuary off SOUTHEND pending sailing orders. Everyone
wondered when D day would be.
6This morning D day was announced by B.B.C. and the convoy
carrying the vehs. of 152 Bde. less 5 CAMERONS sailed for
the long talked of beach-head into Western Europe. The convoy
was shelled in the straits but no damage resulted. The convoy
proceeded slowly but the beach-head was NOT sighted today.
7At first light this morning the beach-head was reached and
the ships proceeded to the unloading area. The ships of the
Bde were to be unloaded into L.C.Ts for landing. L.C.Ts were
not available until dusk and no vehs of Bde H.Q. were
unloaded today. Half of marching parties of 2 & 5 Seaforth
    Page 3 of 24
PlaceDateHourSummary of Events and InformationReferences to Appendices
7and the marching party of 5 Camerons were put ashore today.
8Remainder of Marching Parties of 2 & 5 Seaforth were landed.
The Bde. Comd. landed today and rejoined Bde and est. Bde H.Q.
2 miles South of Reviers with S.L.O. and L.O.3 who landed with
the Marching Party of Bde. H.Q. some 18 in all. 2 Seaterth
carried sweep of woods from FONTAINE HENRY to CAIRON to clear
out snipers. They took ten P.W. and captured some tpt.
9Unloading of vehs of Bde. H.Q. went on apace and vehs. of Bde
H.Q. & 5 Seaforth were almost all landed today except for
several sigs. vehs. of Bde.H.Q. Tps. and vehs. were
directed from beaches to conc. area,
10.The remainder of the vehs of the Bde were landed andAppx 'A' (Strength return)
concentrated. Only two vehs of Bde. H.Q. were drowned.
2 SEAFORTH cleared woods NORTH of CAIRON and 5 CAMERONS moved
westwards to deal with an enery RADAR station near DOUVRES -

10La DELIVERANDE. The Bde. was ordered to move to the West of
the beach-head in order to hold base for further ops southwards
from present line. 5 CAMERONS moved to BENOUVILLE to hold the
brs. over the River ORNE while Bde H.Q. and 2 Seaforth moved to
PERRIERS-sur-le-DAN5 SEAFORTH were to stay put in conc.area
in REVIERS but were to go u/c 153 Bde on 11th. JUNE for a
specific operation. This op. was the first of the Div. to
probe southwards to the EAST of CAEN. Orders were given by
Div Comd. for 152 Bde. adv. South from Longueville. This was
to take place in three phases - First 5 CAMERONS to take
ST. HONORINE LA CHARDONNERBITE, Second- 2 SEAFORTH - CUVERVILLE
Third a Bn from 154 Bde (u/c 152 Bde ) to take DEMOUVILLE. The
Arty of the Div. and also of 3 Br. Div plus one AGRA is put in
    sp. Plans were made accordingly.

11New areas were recced in preparation for attack. Just prior toAppx B (Strength return)
moving to such areas the attack was postponed by the Div. Comd.
for 24 hrs. owing to a threat against the left flank of the
    beach-head.
[12The Bde. waited for the attack to begin otherwise NTR.
I.BW. were to be given 152 Bde for the attack on DEMOUVILLE
and the day was spent conferring and planning this three
phase attack. Plans were altered frequently with changing
circumstances and eventually it was ordered that the attack
would be limited to two phases to be carried out by
5 CAMERONS and 2 SEAFORTH., Without tk sp 2 SEAFORTH moved into assembly area
EAST of R. ORNE. During the night 2 SEAFORTH suffered 45
casualties through BUTTERFLY Bombs, incl. four A/Tk. gun crews.
Bde. H.Q moved aTac, H.Q. to RANVILLE - B Ech remaining
    at PERIERS-SUR-LE-DAN

RANVILLE13At 0400 hrs. 5 CAMERONS crossed the S.L. to attack ST. HONORINEAppx "C"
La CHARDONNERETTE. The attack penentrated the village which was
reported clear at 0740 hrs. Bde. Cmd. G.3. Cmd. 128 Fd. Regt. left
Tac H.Q. at 0610 hrs and entered St. HONORINE at 0645 hrs. They
BN visited left fwd coy - B coy of 5 CAMERONS and then went to BN
H.Q. until village was reported clear at 0740 hrs. Bde.Cmd.
Cmd. 2 SEAFORTH then recced S.L. for 2 SEAFORTH attack fixed
H hour for 0915 hrs. At 0800 hrs by shelling and mortaring of
the village made it obvious that an enemy counter-attack was
developing. The Bde. Cmd. accordingly stopped the attack by 2
SEAFORTH all except 'C' Coy., which had already gone forward to
protect S.L. It was not possible to stop completely the Arty.
programme and most of the programme was fired to the detriment
of D.F. Bde. Cmd. then sent word to stop Arty programme for
2 SEAFORTH attack timed to begin at 0915 hrs.

RANVILLE13At about 0915 hrs 5 CAMERONS were savagely counter attacked
by about ten tks. sp. by inf. and S.P. gĂșns. In face of this
    B' & 'D' Coys., withdrew followed by 'A' Coy. 'B' & D' Coys
making for LONGUEVAL. 'A' Coy. and some of 'B' over the ridge
to RANVILLE. The Bde. Cmd. who was on the ridge stopped all
personnel withdrawing this and made them take up a defn. posn.
on the fwd edge of the ridge. He then ordered 2 SEAFORTH who were
waiting behind the ridge to occupy a def posn astride the ridge.
This was done and by about 1145 hrs when situation was
stabilised and the def. locality firm with A/Tk. guns dug in,
5 CAMERONS were ordered to re-org. in LONGUEVAL and to take
over from R.U.R. who were in that village. About 1400 hrs
it was discovered by means of a messenger from ST. HONORINE
sent by Maj. Cairns that some fifteen Camerons were still in
    Page 8 of 24
PlaceDateHourSummary of Events and InformationReferences to Appendices
RANVILLE13LONGUEVAL and wanted to know what to do. One 6 Pdr. of
5 CAMERONS K.O.d 3 Enemy tks. Bde H.Q. at RANVILLE
was heavily shelled and mortared in the morning and at
intervals throughout the day and the Bde. Major and Camp
Commandant were both wounded. The Padre at the A.D.S. was
also wounded. In the afternoon the situation became more
settled and the 5 CAMERONS were soon re-organised again. BdeAppx "D"
H.Q. moved location nearer river in the evening. It is odd
in the first battle in Western Europe that the force which
counter-attacked 5 CAMERONS in ST HONORINE should be 21st.,
Panzer Recce Unit - old enemy of desert days. The 5 SEAFORTH
14who had been u/c 153 Bde came back into 152 Bde during early
hours of today and relieved 12 DEVON in area west of RANVILLE.
5 CAMERONS relieved R.U.R. in LONGUEVAL. The Cmd. visited all
units and tied up the defs of the Bde area moving one Coy.,
    Page 9 of 24
PlaceDateHourSummary of Events and InformationReferences to Appendices
RANVILLE145 SEAFORTH fwd. which defs by afternoon were Firm. There was
spasmodic shelling throughout day. The Bde. area was further
strengthened during the night by the laying of mines by
5 CAMERONS and 5 SEAFORTH. A Patrol from 5 CAMERONS went out
across the R. ORNE to have a look at the dock-yard area but
    found nothing of interest.
15am.The day was quiet at start but the amount of shelling gradually
increased. Comd. attended conference at Div. where the speeding
up of counter mortar shoots was discussed and the Counter
Mortar Org. amended by the inclusion of wireless sets for this
purpose. A warning came through from Div that an attack was
likely on 153 Bde front at 0400 hrs, 2 SEAFORTH were informed
and ordered to be especially watchful. During the night
2 SEAFORTH fwd. two Coys which had been on fwd slope were
re-organized so as to have 2 Plns per Coy., on reverse slope
    Page 10 of 24
PlaceDateHourSummary of Events and InformationReferences to Appendices
RANVILLE15by day. Bde Cmd. toured res, area with Comd. 6 Airborne Div
and selected posns. for one Sqn. 13/18 H. who were to come
in to the area in the event of enemy c/a. Patrols again went
out CAMERONS to CHATEAU SOUTH of their post which Chateau
they found occupied and the 2 SEAFORTH destroyed 3 enemy tks.
which had been K.Od by 5 CAMERONS. This they accomplished
    successfully.
16True to reported form the enemy launched an attack with some
eight to fourteen tanks, S.P. guns and 2 - 3 Coys. Inf. The
attack was against 1 GORDONS but by shelling obtained through
out the Bde area whilst it went on resulting in several
casualties amongst Officers, Men and Vehicles. Sqn. 13/18 H
moved up into previously recced posn. in 2 SEAFORTH and 5
SEAFORTH sector. No attack developed on this Bde front and the
    Page 11 of 24
PlaceDateHourSummary of Events and InformationReferences to Appendices
RANVILLE.16shelling decreased after 0800 hrs. 5 CAMERONS were relieved
in LONGUEVAL by 5 SEAFORTH, 5 CAMERONS on relief occupying
5 SEAFORTH posn in reserve. The code word for the take over
being complete, was received from both Bns by 0107 hrs on
    17th., June 44.
17NTR during night 16/17 June except one curious aircraft whichAppx "E" (Strength return)
flew with bright lights blazing and a mortar bomb or two
which disturbed the rest of 2 SEAFORTH. Bde. Cmd. toured
5 SEAFORTH area in LONGUEVAL and ordered re-arrangement of
the defence posn. This entailed holding further fwd and the
moves were completed during the night and posns. dug in.
Throughout the day the line was amazingly quiet in the Bde.
sector with only light shelling at infrequent intervals and
a hasty visit of 2 Messerschmidts. Reports continued to come
in of mov and activity of the sector on our left. There was
    Page 12 of 24
PlaceDateHourSummary of Events and InformationReferences to Appendices
RANVILLE17a slight change in the Coy posns of 5 SEAFORTH and a fresh mine
field was laid during the night, 17/18th. June on the front of
this Bn at LONGUEVAL. During the night the same aircraft
was seen flying around as on the previous night. It was
ordered that a patrol from 5 SEAFORTH accompanied by an R.E.
Officer from 275 Fd. Coy., should attempt to remove the
demolition charges in the Control Tower of the Northern
installations of CAEN shipyards. This required an hour's time
inside the Tower. The Patrol was spotted and had to retire.
This would have been a great accomplishment and it was proposed
to try again on the following night.
    RANVILLE18Situation normal at dawn after a quiet night. The G.O.C. 51 (H)
Div. accompanied by G.O.C. 15 (S) Div. and the comds. of 44 &
46 Inf. Bde and 31 Tk. Bde visited the Bde.H.Q. this morning.
PlaceDateHourSummary of Events and InformationReferences to Appendices
RANVILLE18It was a case of being all friends together as both the Cmd
    152 Bde, his B.M. G 3 & I.O. had all been at one time in 15 (S)
Div. as well as the G.O.C. 51 (H) Div who, of course, at one time
    commanded 15 (S) Div.
The air spt. has been adequate all along and the Bde saw
several attacks on their front today. An interesting conjecture
was made this afternoon about three black objects seen on the
road SOUTH of ST.HONORINE - it was thought that they might
perhaps be 'Beetles! A warning was received that an attackAppx "F"
might be made on the sector on the left of 152 Bde at first
    light in the morning.
19The attack by the enemy did not materialise. The CAMERON
patrol was very successful - killing two enemy NORTH of
ST. HONORINE, wounding one and bringing him back as well as
taking one P.W. belonging to 200 Fd. Rft. Bn. This P. W. was a
    Page 14 of 24
PlaceDateHourSummary of Events and InformationReferences to Appendices
RANVILLE19,poor type and had no inf. about anything The 5 SEAFORTH
patrol with R.E. att was again spotted and was not able to
accomplish its task. This is a disappointment as the Area in
which the Tower is situated has been put out with our
patrolling area. Another 5 Seaforth patrol detected activity and
wiring in CHATEAU WOODS. Save for gusts of shelling there was
little to report during day. The Bde was ordered to attack
ST. HONORINE again and Bde. Cmd. ordered 5 CAMERONS to carry
out the attack. This is to be by the way of being a
diverionary attack for something much bigger at another part
of the front. The 5 CAMERONS are to have seven fd. two med.
and one hy Regts. in sp plus sqn tks and tp.17 Pr S.P. It is
meant to give the CAMERONS every chance to stay in
ST HONORINE this time. Enemy counter attacks will almost be
    Page 15 of 24
PlaceDateHourSummary of Events and InformationReferences to Appendices
RANVILLE19welcome. About eight in the evening ten enemy were seen inAppx "G"
Chateau Woods area. Fire was opened and enemy ran away quickly.
The CAMERONS attack was postponed 24 hrs in the evening.
20The Patrols for the night took no P.W. but discovered thatAppx "H"
ST. HONORINE was more strongly held than usual and that enemy
were very nervous. They were using many flares, nevertheless
new posns were found further EAST towards ESCOVILLE. During the
day nine M.Es were reported over Bde area - they did not stop
to attack. Enemy shelling with the usual heavier reply by our guns
was a feature of the day, Smoke was used on the front today.
Preparations for for op PERTH, being the CAMERON attack, went
    ahead.
21The patrol of 5 SEAFORTH to island being the R. ORNE and theAppx "I"
CANAL DU ORNE found no enemy despite a huge "elephant drive"
throughout it. The day was generally quiet apart from a little
    Page 16 of 24
PlaceDateHourSummary of Events and InformationReferences to Appendices
RANVILLE21activity by the enemy on 5 SEAFORTH front which was soon
dispersed and damaged by arty. fire. Several enemy wounded
were seen to be carried away. The band of 5 CAMERONS played
retreat close by Bde.H.Q. and the wind was blowing towards the
enemy - These CAMERONS are really going to hold ST HONORINE
this time. 5 SEAFORTH changed a coy posn during the night 21/22
June to give cover to right flank of CAMERONS during the
attack. With this coy went tp tks of A Sqn 13/8 Hussars and
two A/tk guns. Harsssing fire was put down to cover noise of
movement of tks. This held up patrolling which in consequence
did not yield with fruitful results.
22Stand to started with a fire in an amn dump behind Bd H.Q. which
did it no damage but seemed to shorten Stand to hour.
A conference was held by Bde. Cmd at 0930 hrs to give orders for
CAMERONS attack. It was a formidable array that presented
    Page 17 of 24
PlaceDateHourSummary of Events and InformationReferences to Appendices
BAS DE RANVILLE25The 2 i/c 5 CAMERONS arrived at the Bn with 140 O.Rs this
morning. This made it possible to re-organise 5 CAMERONS on
a four Coy., basis once again. Reports of enemy tanks moving
about on Bde front came in all day. Perhaps the enemy was
making a show of his tank strength but taking away his losses
on 23rd., June from his total numbers on the morning of that
day, he could not have had many at his disposal. Thus these
    reports were not too alarming.
26The patrols from the Bde went out as usual on the night 25/26
June and established that enemy were still holding CHATEAU
WOODS despite reports to contrary. This night was quiet but
at 0730 hrs 26th., June a big barrage opened up in the WEST
of the Bde front - this was the beginning of 8 CORPS operation
EPSOM. The sound of this was very cheering and throughout the
Bde great interest was displayed in its progress.

BAS DE RANVILLE.26Maj. Jarman Cmd. 193 A/Tk.Bty. was killed at ST. HONORINE this
morning and Cmd of all A/Tk Guns in the Bde passed to Major
    Semple O.C. 243 A/Tk.Bty. Lt.Col. Monroe relinquished Cmd
5 CAMERONS today. Cmd. was assumed by Maj Cairns with Maj.
    Noble still remaining 2 i/c. The change over between 2 & 5
SEAFORTH postponed yesterday was put on for tonight. The
following was mov order - 2 SEAFORTH were to leave one Coy.,
less 1 Pl in ST HONORINE and to hold LONGUEVAL as 5 SEAFORTH
had been doing ie. less one Coy., less one pl. No movs. of
M.M.G.s or A/TK guns were to take place. Crews were to change
over only. Only one Coy., was to move at a time owing to
proximity of enemy. Code word for completion of change over
to be NANCY. The hours of daylight passed peacefully amid
fit-ful sunshine and showers, This rustic peace was torn only
at infrequent intervals by bursts of enemy shell fire and
    Page 19 of 24

BAS DE RANVILLE.26Nebel werfer which caused some casualties among 2 SEAFORTH.
    At 1500 hrs G.O.C. 51 (H) Div. visited Bde.H.Q. In the
evening it was reported to Bde. H.Q. by 5 CAMERONS that the
Padre 126 Fd. Regt., having been misinformed, had walked into
COLOMBELLES and back without having seen any enemy. This news
caused a stir to say the least though it was expected that the
report of there being no enemy in COLOMBELLES was exaggerated.
A patrol was dispatched to investigate but found the woods
around the CHATEAU to be held as before. God looks after his
    own people.
27Bad weather made the change over of fwd Bns slow but eventually
NANCY was given by 2 SEAFORTH at 0506 hrs and by 5 SEAFORTH at
0630 hrs. The relief though long, had been without incident.

BAS DE RANVILLE27The day started strangely for Bde H.Q. All Officers were
summoned and Brig. D.H. Haugh M.C. said goodbye - he relinquished
cmd. 152 Bde and was assumed by Brig AJH Cassels. The new Cmd
spent the morning getting in the picture and at 1315 hrs along
with B.M. and Lt. Col. Clapham (O.C. 128 Fd. Rgt.) visited
2 SEAFORTH and 5 SEAFORTH. Patrol policy for Bde was changed
today Bns. now submitting proposed patrol for following night
at 0800 hrs. At 1700 hrs Bde. Cmd. visited 5 CAMERONS with B.M.
and went round all Coy., posns. The day was quiet save one
sharp bout of NEBELWERFER fire on 5 SEAFORTH Area about 2030 hrs.
This was replied to effectively by our gunners who shot up
enemy fwd troops between CUVERVILLE and GIBERVILLE, This is now
deemed more effective than shooting back at mortar posns which
are probably vacated immediately mortar has fired. The
remainder of night was quiet and Bn Patrols were activeAppx "M"

    28Stand - to quiet but a battle was raging WEST of R. ORNE.Appx "N"
Bde Cmd. along with G.3 attended a conference at Div. H.Q. at
which impending ops were discussed. The first of a series ofAppx "O"
"I" conferences was held at Div. at 1100 hrs. This is to take
place daily in an effort to pin point enemy posns in front of
Div. At 1400 hrs Bde Cmd visited 5 CAMERONS and then proceeded
on recce to ST HONORINE. G.O.C. visited 2 SEAFORTH in the
afternoon. Other visits for the day comprised C.O. Royals from
7 Armd. Div. There was light shelling in Bde area in afternoon
coming from SP 88 mm Guns in DEMOUVILLE area. Bde Cmd attended
conference at H.Q. 153 Bde at 1700 hrs. There was more light
shelling in the evening in ST HONORINE and LONGUEVAL after which
the area was quiet for some time.

BAS DE RANVILLE.29The peace of the night was broken by an enemy patrol which wasAppx "P"
operating off 5 SEAFORTH area. At 0130 hrs this patrol appeared
and succedded in injuring 2 men of a patrol of 5 SEAFORTH which
was guarding a mine laying party. Later on at 0430 hrs a patrol
(perhaps the same one) came in on the S.E. Coy., of 5 SEAFORTH
firing M.G.s and throwing grenades. No casualties resulted to
Coy., from patrol but a patrol of ours was deluded into
supposing that grenades etc. were being aimed at it and in a bid
to gain cover set off some A.P. mines causing casualties among
themselves in so doing. The enemy patrol was engaged by M.M.G.
fire but casualties inflicted on it are not known. At 0630
two British Airmen who had been shot down over DEMOUVILLE ON
D day came back through LONGUEVAL giving useful information
about enemy dispositions in that area. They brought with them

BAS DE RANVILLE.29a young Nordic Frenchman on his way to join Gen. De Gaulle.
The Bde area was shelled from 1030 hrs to 1200 hrs. Few
casualties were sustained. An attempt was made to shoot down
one of the chimneys in factory with a 17 Pdr. Several hits were
made but the chimney did not fall. One 17 Pdr. of 193 Bty
received a direct hit by a shell but remained in action in
ST HONORINE - a tribute to British tools. The Bde Cmd visited
Bns in the afternoon and attended a conference at Div.H.Q. at
1900 hrs. Later a conference was held at Bde H.Q. for C.O's
