War Diary: 2 Wing Glider Pilot Regiment

    Month and year: June 1944

During the No. 2 Wing Glider Pilots Regiment June 1944 war diary, the unit participated in the D-Day landings on 6 June. Operation TONGA saw 19 crews of No. 2 Wing take part, while Operation MALLARD involved 108 crews, both operations being brilliantly successful with glider pilots receiving high praise. On 8 June, the majority of crews returned from NORMANDY, disembarking at NEWHAVEN and after de-briefing and re- kitting at FARGO they returned to their airfields. During 10-11 June, crews were briefed for Exercise WILDOATS which was subsequently postponed and later cancelled. Towards the end of the month, on 21-22 June, RUSHY WEIR CAMP near BAMPTON was established for F Squadron, while E Squadron set up a similar camp near CHELTENHAM. Forty-eight hour passes were granted to those who had taken part in the operations, with twenty-four hour passes within a twenty-five mile radius for the remainder of the unit.
