    GENERAL
    The whole of January was devoted to the
    training of Infantry in cooperation with tanksAppendix 'A'
    For the first part of the month the Bn remained
    at FOLKESTONE and for the latter part moved to
    WORTHING for a period of approximately 3 weeks.
    This move was necessitated by training
    commitments the Bn thus being near the
    training areas allotted for Inf/Tank Training
    Lieut Col. J.W. Atherton TD assumed command
    of the Bn at WORTHING on 16 January 1944.
    1The Commanding officer held a conference on
    the forthcoming Inf/Tank Training

    2Inf/Tank training commenced and lectures
    were held for all officers and NCOS at Bn HQ
    from 1800 hrs - 2200 hrs.
    A Bde Group Cross Country Run, held at HYTHE
    was won by The Bn, 8th Middlesex Regt being 2nd.
    7All Bn M.T. carried out LCT Training at HYTHE.
    The final of the 43 Div Cross Country Run, held
    mean TENTERDEN was won by the 5 Wilts, the Bn
    finishing 4th.
    8Operational Commitments taken over in the
    event of seaborne raidsappendix 'B''
    The Bn, Boxing Fixture with the 7 Som.L.I. was
    cancelled owing to the later being unable to
    provide a team.
    9+11S Coy went to LYDD 'A' Range for classification

    11A 3 day Gas course for the Pioneer Pl commenced today
    12Advance Party moved to WORTHING. B&D Coys
    to LYDD 'A' Range for classification
    13Cloth model Demonstrations by all Coys in Inf/Tank
    training tactics.
    14All Coys carried out Coy/Sqn Exercise.
    15Bn moved to WORTHING. Troops being transported
    in T.C.Vs. A rear party was left at FOLKESTONE
    16Lieut Col J.W. Atherton TD assumed command of
    the Bn.
    Training began in the SOUTH DOWNS area.
    24Lieut T.H Jobson posted to this Bn having escaped
    from enemy hands.
    2 I/C and QM attended a 43 Div Admin
    Study Period.

    25All officers attended a talk 'Kings call to the
    Bible'
    26Inf. Sect carried out training in Continental Map
    Reading in SOUTH DOWNS area under assistant Bde
    Inf, Offr
    28The Bn took part in the semifinal 214 Bde Gp
    of the 43 Div: Boxing Contest against the 7 Som.L.I.
    and defeated them by 9 fights to 6.
    28-31All Coys carried out Coy/Sqn Field Firing Exercises
