L/Cpl Fred Greenhalgh Memorial

Located in the Pegasus Bridge memorial park alongside the glider landing markers there is a memorial to L/Cpl Fred Greenhalgh who drowned when he was thrown from No.3 Glider during the coup de main assault on Pegasus Bridge.

Dedicated to the memory of L/Cpl Fred Greenhalgh who was the first Allied serviceman to
die on D-Day. A member of the 2nd Battalion The Oxfordshire & Buckingham Light
Infantry, he was drowned near this spot having been thrown from No.3 glider as it crash
landed nearby at about 0018 hours 6 June 1944, during the coup de main force operation to
capture Pegasus and Horsa bridges.

He is now buried 10km away at La Delivrande War Cemetery, Douvres, at plot V.C.4.
