Time was short and the attack was timed for 2200 hrs. Coy Comd went ahead to receive orders attending 12 Para Bn C Group at 2100 hrs. By the time the Coy arrived at the R.V., the attack was about to start, so that they received no clear orders as to objective, start line, information etc.

Our arty fire appeared to catch the Coy and split it in two. Major BAMPFYLDE took two Pls forward with him but he was killed early on, the Coy 2 i/c (Capt,J.H.W. PENGELLY and one Pl comd (Lieut P.TAYLOR) were wounded. The C.O. back at RANVILLE, had des- patched Major E.J. WARREN (OC Sp Coy) to try and ascertain the orders 'D' Coy had been given. Major WARREN arrived at 2150 hrs, a time of much confusion, 'D' Coy and 12 Para Bn coys being mixed up as troops did not appear to have received any orders. Shortly after, they lost their Company Commander. At this stage our own artillery and that of the enemy appeared to be firing on our troops, Major WARREN, however, was able to draw those of the Company who had arrived on the objective away to a flank. During the attack tho C.Q. went to AMFREVILLE to examine the situation but was unable to get a clear picture owing to general "fog of war". The C.O. finally returned to Battalion Head- quarters.

The attack was successful and BREVILLE occupied after very slight opposition. D Coy's losses were at this time three officers and only thirty-five other ranks accounted for. The following day, however isolated parties were collected in and our Other Rank losses were established at five killed, five missing and eighteen wounded. D Coy remained in BREVILLE area until 15 JUN under Major WARREN supported by Lieuts GRANGE and REAKES.

Lieut J.B.E. KITTOV, attached HQ 6 Airlanding Brigade, was killed. Major WARREN (OC Sp Coy) subsequently appointed O.C. "D" Coy with Capt L.A. SALT (Loading Officer) as Second-in-Command Capt.J.D. CARROLL became OC Support Coy.
