In addition to 56 Bde, certain other major units and formations were incorporated in the division for the assault. The principal ones were 8 Armd Bde - an old ally with whom the division had many times co-operated in the desert war - an American battalion of 155 mm self-propelled guns, two British self-propelled field artillery regiments and a medium regiment two self-propelled anti-tank batteries, and units and sub-units with mechanical aids to over- coming natural and artificial obstacles and defences.

Thus the force built around the 50th Division was formidable indeed.

By D-day, its strength with all the supporting units was in the neighbourhood of 38,000.

The Order of Battle, the names of Commanders and Staffs are given at Appx 'A' to Book V.
