West and a smaller one to the South. These were aslt simultaneously. Southern one fell first and Western one by 2030 tho' attackers came under hy fire from two flakships in the harbour. Attack on East defs was not so successful. Enemy then counter attacked hill 72 capturing the HQ personnel left behind. 2115 - Capt. T.F. Cousins recced a path up the Eastern defs and taking a party of approx 40 men penetrated the posn. Q Tps also got on to the objective and captured the Commandant, making him shew the way thro’ the minefd and order his men to surrender. There was a good deal of mopping up to do. Contact was made with US who provided food.

2 Cheshire. - 1400 - Pulled in close to the beach .... "As the tide receded it reavealed numbers of vehs which had been over- turned, damaged or drowned; tks, lorries, DUKWS, and many other vehicles. The beach itself was a shambles. LCsT and LCsI had run up onto beach obstacles and were either overturned on their sides or balanced precariously on top of the obstacles when the tide went out. There was evidence of bitter fighting having E. taken place on the beaches, bodies were still lying strewn on the beach".
1730 - Tac HQ unloaded.
    Took 75 mins to get through exit.
1845 - At Div HQ SOMMERVIEU CO and IO visit Bdes.

0535 - AVREs of 8 Armd Bde coming into harbour by 462 bty gun position are fired at by infantry gun positioned in wood on edge of bty area.
AVREs withdraw.
0930 - 2 Shermans, 1 Flame Thrower Churchill and 12 men from 462 Bty led by Lt. J.A. Carpenter enter Wood to clear out snipers. They discover wood is held in force. The enemy surrendered and 1 officer and 56 ORs together with 4 75 mms and 1 88 mm were captured. Four wounded officers were also taken.
